As a Teacher
The Faculty of Rural Health and Sanitation is one of the seven faculties of Gandhigram Rural Institute and
has regular concurrent field training and supervised field training program in the community. The first one shall be
compared to Sewagram type of field placement. During this program, the health problems of the community are
identified, assessed and analyzed. Then health care services are provided to promote health and prevent diseases
along with curative care services through existing health centers. The entire community in the field practice
demonstration area is now having the health status, which can be compared to that of Kerala state. Apart from
this, sanitation facilities and assets are created in rural areas. Some of these models have become reference
models for the country.
As a Professional
Several medical camps were conducted in rural areas. First rural blood bank was started in 1987 at
Sirunaickanpatti near Gandhigram. Participatory health education models developed have gained name in developing
countries particularly in family welfare and sanitation programs. The government has adopted the policy of target
free approach in family welfare and maternal and child health program. The faculty under my leadership has
become the Human Resource Center for Water and Sanitation Sector for southern four states.
As a Researcher
Several replicable models in school sanitation, community sanitation and sanitation up gradation studies have helped the policy maker to adopt strategies in VIII, IX, X XIth Five Year Plans.
