Examination System

The System of examination – Semester system

Semester Examinations will be held twice in a year. Odd semester examinations will be held in November /December and even semester examinations in April/May.

Assessment

Assessment of the students’ attainment will be two-fold, consisting of Continuous Formative Assessment (CFA) and End Semester Examination (ESE). The ratio between CFA and ESE will normally be 50:50 for theory and 75:25 for practicals and Extension-Work.

In the case of Project-Work, the CFA will be made by the Supervisor against a maximum score of 50 while the ESE will consist of evaluation of the Project-Report by an External Examiner against a maximum score of 25 and a viva-voce examination, jointly by the Supervisor and the External Examiner, against a maximum score of 25.

All ESEs except practicals and Extension-Work will be evaluated by two examiners, namely the Course Teacher and an External Examiner to be selected from among a panel to be provided by the Course Teacher.

Continuous Formative Assessment (CFA):

The CFA in the case of UG Degree and 2-Semester Post-Higher Secondary Diploma Programmes will be made on the basis of three tests, to be conducted at the end of 25, 50 and 75 working days in the Semester respectively, with weightage of 10 marks, 15 marks and 25 marks respectively, the duration of the tests being one hour, an hour and a half and two hours respectively. In the case of PG Degree, PG Diploma, Post-Diploma and 5-year Integrated PG Degree Programmes, the weightage alone will differ, being 10 marks, 15 marks and 20 marks respectively, with five marks set aside for seminar/assignment/quiz etc. A student who misses any one CFA Test may take a Substitution Test. The results of every CFA exercise will be displayed on the notice board within ten days of the exercise. The consolidated CFA marks will be sent to the Controller of Examinations by the HODs before the commencement of ESEs.

End Semester Examination (ESE):

Except in the case of Project-Work and exclusively practical/field placement/internship Courses, the ESE will consist of a written examination of three hours’ duration for a maximum score of 100, the students’ score to be subjected to proportioning at the time of final computation of marks. The question papers of the ESE will be divided into five units, corresponding to the five units of the syllabus of the Course, and each question will have two sets of choices (A&B), subject to the provision that one of the five questions may be choiceless (compulsory question).

The passing minimum in ESE will be 50% of the maximum marks for PG degree, PG Diploma, Post Diploma, 5-year Integrated PG Degree and 4-Semester Post-Higher Secondary Diploma Programmes, and 40% of the maximum marks for UG Degree and 2-Semester Post-Higher Secondary Diploma Programmes. Grading will be done only for students who obtain the passing minimum marks.

A student who misses an ESE on account of genuine reasons like ill-health/unexpected calamity may take it at the end of a Summer Course, if offered, or at the end of a later Semester, provided that, immediately upon his/her return to the campus after his/her period of absence, he/she applies in writing to the HOD through his/her Guru.

Attendance:

Normally a student must earn a minimum of 80% attendance to become eligible to take the ESE in a Course. However, condonation of shortage of attendance will be granted on genuine medical grounds upto a maximum of 10% of the contact days. For this purpose, the student must, immediately upon returning to class after the period of illness, apply for the condonation, submitting a valid medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner through his/her guru to the HOD, who will decide upon the application for condonation of shortage of attendance. Medical certificates submitted on the eve of the ESE will not be accepted.

If a student has earned 70% or more but less than 80% of attendance in a Course in a Semester, he/he will be debarred from the ESE in that Course in that Semester. However he/she may take the ESE when offered in a later Semester or during a Summer Course.

If a student has earned less than 70% attendance, he/she will be debarred from the ESE in the Course and his/her Statement of Grades will read (Inadequate Attendance) against that Course. Such a student must repeat that Course when offered in a later Semester or make up in a Summer Course, if offered. Attendance in a Course will always be reckoned from the day of joining the Course to the last day of the Course.

Condonation of attendance upto a maximum of 10% shall be given by the HOD of the concerned department offering the Course on genuine reasons like ill health etc. For this the students have to provide documentary evidence like medical certificate from a qualified medical practioner immediately after returning to the campus after availing the leave.

Grade, GP, GPA & CGPA:

The marks scored by the student will be converted into Grades(G) and Grade Points (GP). In the case of UG Degree and 2-Semester Post-Higher Secondary Diploma Programmes, the Departmental Committee will award Grades according to the fixed score-ranges shown here under:

The GPA will be the ratio of the sum of the product of the number of Credits of a Course and the Grade Points scored in that Course, computed for all the Courses undergone by the students, to the sum of the number of Credits of all the Courses in that Semester:

CFA =  S (C x GP) / S C

The CGPA will be calculated similarly, considering all the Courses enrolled in from the first Semester. Grades F,I and W will not be reckoned in while computing the GPA and the CGPA.

Classification of Results:

The Consolidated Statement of Grades will classify the students performance according to the following norms:

  1. PG Degree, PG Diploma, Post-Diploma, 4-Semester Post-Higher Secondary diploma and 5-year Integrated PG Degree Programmes:

GPA Classification

7.00 and above I Class

6.00 to 6.99 II Class

(b) UG Degree and 2-Semester Post-Higher Secondary Diploma Programmes:
