The Department of Education at Gandhigram Rural Institute is a reputed department for teacher education, recognized for its pioneering efforts in teaching, training, educational research and extension. It actively aligns with the norms and polices of the National Education Policy (NEP- 2020) of India. The Department of Education (DoE) creates empowered, reflective, ethical educators who are capable of transforming the rural educational landscape through inclusive, innovative and learner-centred practices, thereby contributing to the holistic development of individual and the nation. The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) is granted with recognition by the NCTE to offer the B.Ed Integrated Course under the Choice Based Credit System from the year 2003-2004, onwards. The GRI is granted with recognition by the NCTE to offer the M.Ed degree course under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) 2008-2009 onwards. The students are admitted to the M.Ed Programme through an All-India Entrance Examination conducted at Gandhigram Rural Institute. The Department of Education so far produced 20 batches of B.Ed Teacher Trainees and 15 batches of M.Ed scholars. Twenty-five Ph.D. scholars completed and nineteen Ph.D. scholars are at present pursuing research in the major thrust areas of Educational Research. The vision of the Department is to develop and sustain quality in teacher education programmes by integrating the current knowledge and pedagogical principles with the basic education programme propounded by Mahatma Gandhiji.
